Hello everyone,

I am Chaitali Dekhtawala. Today I am sharing with you all, my Guest Designer entry for this month's challenge at MMA. Very excited to be the guest designer and loving the uniquely beautiful challenge by Priyanka Srivastava, "What's your Raashi (Zodiac Sign)?". Here is what I created...

It was a delight to create for this challenge as I've always been fascinated by the sun signs and their effect on our personality and life. I chose to create the entire zodiac calendar with all the 12 fabulous signs, their symbols, their time frames, and their unique traits. Also, used various elements related to the zodiac like the astronomical clock, the sun, moon, stars, and decided on a galaxy backdrop to match the theme.

So below is the stepwise instructions of my project:

# I have used the reverse side of the canvas. First applied Artist's Loft white acrylic gesso all over the canvas. Then used Tim Hotz Lattice work stencil and Finnabair's modeling paste to add textures on the canvas. (see pics: Step 1 & Step 2)

# Further added more textures to the background base using Golden's crackle paste, Finnabair's sand paste, art stones small and medium, chipboards, plastic caps of different sizes from home. Used Tacky Glue to stick everything on to the canvas.  (see pics: Step 3 & Step 4)

# Once fully dried, applied one more coat of gesso over everything (see pic: Step 5)

# Drew the main focal part - the sun and the moon, on white card stock and colored it with Pima Marketing's watercolors and acrylic paints. Enhanced it with beads, microbeads, and glitters. Later after cutting the shapes, kept aside for drying (see pic: Step 6)

# Then covered the entire canvas with Liquitex's black colored gesso. Once dried, started the first layer of coloring using Finnabair's art alchemy SPARKS Acrylic & Metallique paints as shown in the pic. (see pic: Step 7)

# Similarly, colored and decorated the astronomical clock and cut half into 2 semi-circles, and pasted them on to the canvas, also pasted the sun and moon on the border of the canvas with two-sided foam stickers to give it a slight raise as shown in the pic. Further, added circular cardboard in the center of the canvas to elevate that part. Added few strings around it for effect. (see pic: Step 8)

# Printed a pic of 12 zodiac signs in a circular design. Colored with Pima Marketing's watercolors and Finnabair's art alchemy SPARKS Acrylic colors, and pasted on the elevated center circular cardboard.
# Further added more Finnabair's art alchemy SPARKS Acrylic & Metallique paints, Finnabair's art Pebbles, Finnabair's Gloden Mica Flakes, glitters, golden strings, chipboards, and many other metal embellishments. Also used Finnabair's art alchemy Waxes and white and golden splatters to intensify the overall galaxy effect. Also added a golden string horizontally and vertically with round metal zodiac signed coins. You can see the various texture effects and details in the closeup pics below

# Added the word "Zodiac" using the page curl effect and the quote "... where you find who you are!" on top of the canvas. Decorated it with few splatters, stars, and chipboards.
# Created 12 small rectangular Zodiac cards containing the sign name, their dates, and traits from white card stock. Colored and pasted them on to the canvas side border as shown in the pic. Decorated the border with silver stars and sequence.

Below are the different close-up pics of my project.

Hope you like my project and it inspires you to take part in this fabulous challenge. You have time to play until Aug 31st. So do participate! and win awesome goodies.

Thank you. Stay blessed.

August Challenge Inspiration - DT Priyanka Srivastava

Hello Crafty Souls,

This month our moodboard was suggested by our DT Priyanka Srivastava and she will be choosing the winner for the month as well ...
She created this beautiful moodboard "What's Your Raashi?" and today she is here with a tutorial to inspire you all with her amazing creativity...
This is our moodboard

Over to Priyanka now....
Hello everyone,

I am Priyanka. This moodboard was a product of my unique Aquarian trait of being unconventional. For an Aquarian girl, like me, normal stuff is boring. Aquarians are known to be unorthodox. They are innovative and unique, they can dream up schemes and ideas the rest of the world simply cannot. they are the Most eccentric of all the zodiac signs. Thinking outside the box? What box?
Aquarians always go against the normal trend. If everyone is going East, an aquarian will go West, North, South or any other direction for that matter, except East! They are definitely "NOT" normal.
One of their strongest personality trait is Avant-gardism! Avante garde art. The latest poem consisting of only words beginning with 'A', or a new artwork featuring simply an upturned dustbin, may not appeal to everyone... but Aquarius laps up the extreme, edgy and, well, frankly, weird shit in the arts world. They get it.
So here's my project showing the typical AQUARIUS trait...NORMAL IS BORING!

Step 1: I took a pattern paper filled with lovely shades of purple, mauve and teal. I choose these colours for the moodboard as they are my favorite !

Step 2:  I choose a picture of an Aquarian girl to be the highlight. She has symbol for aquarius zodiac on her forehead and is wearing  headband having a small water-bearing jug embellishment. After I chose a spot where the picture of Aquarian girl will go, I used a flourish stencil around the spot to make a frame. After that I sprayed some colour mists and sprays on and around it to give it a pop.

Step 3: I used white coir to make a round frame around the picture to give it some dimension. I decided to keep the picture crooked to give it an eccentric and whimsical look (SO AQUARIAN OF ME!). After that I used script stamp to give additional texture and element to my layout.

Step 4: I used a lot of art stones and different flowers to decorate it and highlight it.

Step 5: After this I typed a quote " NORMAL IS BORING" and cut it out using fancy scissors. I distressed the edges and painted inside the words using waxes of teal and amethyst colours. I also used some stenciling, white coir, art stones and quilled flowers of the same colour scheme to highlight it.

Step 6: Finally to bring everything together, I sprayed a little bit of white, teal and purple colours on the entire layout.

Hope you like my project.

Thank You.

August Special Guest Designer ~ Aditi Mahajan

Hello Crafty Souls...
Welcome to Mixed Media Academy Challenge
Today we have an awesome crafter  Aditi Mahajan as our Guest Designer

Blog    Instagram   Facebook    YouTube

My name is Aditi and I live in Bangalore, India. Along with my Mother, I started Dots to Lines and we have been mixed media artists and scrapbookers professionally for about 5 years. We are into paper-crafting, layouts, journaling, album making, altered art and scrapbooking. Our style of art and craft is a fusion of techniques and use of vibrant colours. We aim to spread joy. Every creation of ours, speaks a story and we enjoy sharing this with people.
Apart from this, I'm a practising Psychologist/Life Coach. I also incorporate art into my therapeutic process.

About The Project

The colour palette works for me very well because these are my go-to colours. I’ve used a crescent moon idea and created my interpretation of the universe. I believe my purpose is to heal, inspire and spread light. The Virgo Symbol is of a maiden carrying s shaft of wheat. In my interpretation, I’ve used it as a fairy carrying this light to illuminate the world. I’ve also depicted the universe from the Moon’s perspective, which means space seems white and the moon and stars have the colour:)! This to me is a metaphorical representation of how others perspective and point of view is so important for me. The phrases I’ve used are lines from a poem that I’ve written and talked about this idea.

I also made a video tutorial  for the same where you can find the step by step process

Some more close ups of my project...

Thank you Aditi for this wonderful project with so many details...

Do participate in our challenge to win some awesome goodies and also be our next Guest Designer...

What's Your Raashi ? means what's your star/zodiac sign? There are 12 astrological signs, also known as signs of the Zodiac - in order, they are - Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. ...
You can choose yours or any of the Zodiac you like.
Or may be all of them.
What's your interpretation of Zodiac...???
Here's the Moodboard for you by our DT Priyanka ...

This is a beautiful and unique mood board and we hope you all will participate in this challenge.

Let's see what our DT created to Inspire you...

Hello everyone:) My Zodiac is Sagittarius. I can't find any paper or graphic with my sign, so I used my imagination and here it is... magic. Zodiac sign have something of mysticism, mystery, magic - that why I used small fairy. I used also metal arrows.

My inspiration for August moodboard
According to me zodiac interpretation is
"your Sun sign dictates your zodiac personality, while your Moon sign, the second most important influence represents your emotions, your inner mood. And the two together strongly influence your emotional mode of operation" so with this project i combined both of them name of project is THE STARS ABOVE US

Hello, creative friends! Margarita is here. For this amazing challenge Zodiac Signs I created something related to my Zodiac Sign. My sign is a virgo. And so I decided to make a round canvas in which embodied my vision of this sign. Tender, feminine and mysterious girl surrounded by stars and moons. And what is your zodiac sign? Join us in this incredible challenge!

My Moon sign is Virgo and in our tradition we gave name to the baby by their moon sign!! Virgo means young women so I portrait women with watercolor as my focal point. I also made some of zodiac sign with polymer clay and I used them as embellishment. My own art identification is water color, mixed media and Clay (as I am major ceramic student ) so I used all those techniques. I hope this project inspire you to create your own identity!!

No photo description available.

Gemini is my zodiac sign. I create a canva with a cosmic background. I applied sand paste through the mask, then I used several paint colors to make space. I used also stars from resin casts. At the end I added the gemini symbol

Hello,
my star sign is LEO ♌️..Here I have altered a cardboard to show a side of a LION.  I used a Lion face and added some stars and moon. I also added a Leo quote to make it more interesting

Hope you guys like it

Hi! Sab here! This is my first project for a wonderful moodboard challenge! What's your zodiac sign? Mine is Libra! So I decided to use a Tatoo's photo of my sign.... and to create a magic atmosphere with black and blue, a canvas rich of embellishment, stars and light points. I used black gesso and covered it with a metallic blue. I used a lot of metallic, resin and wooden embellishment. I used also a big chipboard.

And you? What's your sign and what's your interpretation?

No photo description available.

This moodboard is one of my favourites among what we hosted this year so far. This is so unique...
My Moon Sign is Leo. Leo loves to be different always, so I added this Quote on my project. Also added an astronomical clock as my centrepiece here. Hope you like it...
